In recent years MySpace has been dwarfed by Facebook, but should you still give MySpace the time of day? Currently MySpace has about 125 million users and is the second most popular social networking website behind Facebook. So while it might not be as influential as Facebook, it’s still worth considering.

MySpace works in a similar way to Facebook. First you will need to create a profile page which will have all of your basic information. On MySpace however, the profile pages are completely customizable: backgrounds, colors, music, everything can be changed. So you will want to spend some time and create a professional and interested profile page.

The demographic of MySpace is slightly younger then Facebook as well. The average age is 14-24. Much like Facebook, MySpace users divulge massive amounts of personal information on their profile which you can use to target your advertising.

MySpace also has a large number of music pages which up and coming artists use to get noticed. Recently, Weird Al Yankovic used MySpace to re-emerge as a mainstream artist. He successfully used MySpace to make his music parody, “White and Nerdy” go viral, which re-launched his career.

MySpace can be an ideal advertise avenue if your target audience is a younger crowd. Here are some tips that will help you if you plan on using MySpace.

• Friend like-minded MySpace users. If you are company that sells camping gear, find people interested in camping and friend them.
• Don’t send unsolicited messages to users. You will be flagged as a spammer which will stop any advertising campaign dead in its tracks.
• Try and be as authentic as possible. Don’t sound like you are writing a brochure when you talk with MySpace users.
• Do yourself and disable comments. People leave endless comments and huge videos which take forever to download.
• Post something every day. Even it’s something extremely simple, but post something every day.
• Put a call to action on your main page, whether it be a discount for your MySpace friends or just something asking people to visit your website.
